Most Christians believe that when they sin or miss the mark in Christ they lose their righteous position with God or their good standing with God and He may punish them for their sins. Nothing can be farther than the truth than this one, it is not true. That will make God to be unjust and we all know that our God is just. How so, Remember Christ was punished for our sins. So God cannot punish the same twice.
This is destroying the church, by not appreciating the finish works of our Lord Jesus Christ. It leads to condemnation and it kills. Most believed that our sins are not forgiven until we confess them. It is true before Christ or before you accept Jesus but after you are accepted and grafted into Christ, you no longer a sinner and you the righteousness of God. You remain righteous even if you miss the mark or sin (don’t forget that in Christ you are righteous by faith), the just shall live by faith. Allow me to explain. They usually quote this verse:
1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”
While this verse is absolutely true but it does not say that every time you sin or miss the mark, you must confess your sins, so that you will be forgiven. Then what does it mean to confess your sins in this verse? Good question, before you accept Jesus Christ, you are or were a sinner. By confessing with your mouth and believing in your heart that Jesus is Lord and he died for our sins. You are acknowledging that you are a sinner. It is a onetime act that you do when you receive Christ, confessing your sins, you do not do it one by one. I do not think anyone has done that. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. David said blessed is those that God does not count theirs against them. Hallelujah.
I am not against confessing your sins. If confessing your sins makes you feel better, go ahead confess all your sins every time you miss the mark but the question is, what about those sins you forget to confess and those you did not know were sins? The bible says that everything that is not of faith is sin. I rest my case; in Christ you are the righteousness of God, whether you sin or not. It is not based on what you do but based on what our Lord Jesus did at the cross. Glory to God! This does not mean that now you may sin as much as you like. No! no! It is about knowing your true identity and what our Lord Jesus Christ has done for us.
Lastly if you believe that God still punishes sins in Christ e.g. you are sick and you think God is punishing you because of a certain sin, think again, that is not true. Believing like that brings condemnation and condemnation kills. In other words, you are killing yourself by giving that particular sin and that sickness (above example) power over you. Beloved child of God, when you miss the mark or sin, pick yourself up and thank Jesus, that all your sins are forgiven. When you feel sick or have symptoms of sickness in body say, by His stripes you are healed. You are healed indeed, God cannot lie.
Do you not get me wrong, God is still against sin, God hate sin. I am also against sin and there are still consequences of sin but it is not God punishing you and it does not change your identity in Christ. Think about this if God is punishing us for our sins today. It will make him unjust God because the bible says Christ died for our sins. Meaning God punished Jesus for our sins, if God is still punishing sin today, he will be punishing the same sin twice because he already punished Jesus for our sins, “he who knew no sin became sin for us so that whoever believes will be the righteousness of God”.
By knowing such truths, you will have power to overcome sin.
“Sin shall not have dominion over you because you are no longer under law but under grace”
Till next time stay blessed. Walk in victory! We have victory in Christ! It’s all about what Jesus did for us. Christ or nothing.
